And God Spoke

Category: Faithblogs

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… And God said…” (Genesis 1:1&3a – NIV)

Have you ever given creation a thought? I mean, have you really thought about it? If you subscribe to the “monkey becomes man” theory then you probably haven’t. However, if you believe in creation by intelligent design, i.e. God, then you owe it to yourself to ponder afresh the marvel of the created universe.

The book of Genesis begins with the account of creation which is believed to be fable or legend by some; an ancient urban legend that was told around campfires and passed from generation to generation. Some believe in a kind of creation/evolution combination, while others simply pooh-pooh the whole creation idea and say that everything came into being by some random occurrence that happens billions of years ago.

Personally, I believe in the God of creation; that He created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them, as the Bible says, full stop! It’s not that I’m being ignorant of scientific evidence (I believe scientifically there were six stages to creation), and I’m not saying that I believe in a literal six day creation (though it could have happened this way). All I am saying is that I believe that God created. I don’t know when, or how long it took him, but God created.

What I find amazing is that He created everything but man with only the words of His mouth, “And God said…” (Gen. 3a) He spoke, he created. WOW!

My son has lots of Lego and he creates many things with it; planes, cars, houses, and so on. But even before he creates he has something with which to create other things. He has lots of Lego to create with, but God created from nothing. We are told that, “Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness.” (Gen. 2a – The Message) Nothingness. Emptiness. Blackness. There was nothing. Then God spoke and there was something.

Take some time over the next few days, and consider the creation account. Think about how God in His infinite wisdom chose to create all that is; contemplate how God, with only His words, bought everything into existence.

God spoke and it happened. It’s really an understatement to say, those were some pretty powerful words!

  1. I believe that God created the earth in 6 days.

If Adam was one day old when he was created, but looked older, I believe that God could also make the earth to ‘look old’ too. Certainly, this is within His power.

The bible says 6 days; it was 6 days.

  2. Thanks Rob for this comment, your thoughts are always welcome. The Bible does indeed say that the world was created in six days, although we have to ask was this six literal days? In 2 Peter 3:8 it says, “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” (NIV) This tells us that God is not bound by time, and therefore works outside of it’s boundaries. I think the whole “six days” is indicative that creation, at least the heavens and the earth part, was done in six stages. Could it have been six literal days, of course! Could it have been six thousand years, according to the above Bible verse maybe. What’s important is that God created. He created scientifically, as everything was created in a chain of events; He created thoughtfully; He created beautifully; in short God created. A lot of people waste a lot of time on this issue. They argue six days vs. six stages vs. six thousand years and so on. My answer to this is marvel in creation, but at the end of the day we have much bigger fish to fry. We need to be more concerned about mercy and justice and loving one another, as well as following after Jesus. God bless you Rob, keep the comments coming!
