Why Jesus?
Before I became a Christian, one of the main questions I asked with regards to Christianity and faith was, “why Jesus?” Back then, I could accept, to a point, that God loves us – after all, if the Bible was true, he created us in his image and gave us life by his own breath. I could also appreciate that if there was indeed a good God there would be need for restitution for all the bad things people did. But I didn’t fully understand, or appreciate, the concept of sacrifice, especially that of God’s own Son, Jesus. I would think, “Why would God, the God of the heavens and the earth, send his Son to die a horrible death on a cross?”
Like many people, I thought that there was no way that a loving father would allow his only son to go through what Jesus went through. Even now I know that I could never give my son up in such a way, but God the Father did (John 3:16).
And that’s the point.
Early on in my Christian walk a wise man told me hat God wanted to save mankind so desperately, that he was so passionate about us, that he gave all that he had to give – there was nothing else left for the Father to give. In short, the Father sent Jesus to the world, because Jesus meant the world to the Father.
I don’t want to write endless amounts of theology on the subject and thereby lose the simplicity of this truth, so I’ll leave you with this thought. That God loves you so much that he was willing to give the one thing that meant everything to him, Jesus. He loves you so much that he allowed his only Son to be humiliated, beaten, and crucified, so that in turn he might destroy death, that we might know life – true life – life that never ends.
