33Miles – One Life

Category: Music

What do these music styles have in common – Jazz, Gangsta Rap, Bluegrass, Country? Just some of the music styles I’m not a big fan of. I will listen to most music genres, but there’s something about the afore mentioned styles that just get under my skin, and not in a good way. However, I am a big fan of Christian “Country” band 33Miles. Maybe it’s because they don’t just stick to the usual Country sound, they diversify to play more a Southern Rock/Country mix, reminiscent of Joe Club (remember them?) and Rush of Fools, with a pinch of Casting Crowns. This, together with the beautiful lyrics of One Life, and you’ve got powerful CD that can only be described as Southern Rock – Country – Worship.

I was turned on to 33Miles by a friend, who like me doesn’t go out of his way to listen to Country, but raved on about their first self-titled album – which is good, and I must admit I have listened to it quite a few times, but there are a couple of weaker songs on it (it was their first CD). However, One Life, their second album is a solid release with nary a bad song in sight.

The music is brilliant and expertly played, and the vocals are thick with multi-layering, but it’s the lyrics on this album that stand out to me. Each song is a testament to the faith of the guys in 33Miles, as they sing about faith, hope, and love, and invite all to “come and follow Jesus.” And every song is epic in scope, in that they have a tremendous build up, not only in the music, but in the fact that they leave you feeling like you can do anything though Jesus – always a good thing!

Standout tracks include, well, all of ‘em! There isn’t a “filler” track anywhere to be found on this album, something I can’t say about many albums I listen to. This is one outstanding and inspiring album, a worthy addition to any music collection. To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if we begin to see some of the songs on this album used in worship services, as there is a definite Hillsong/Hillsong United feel to some of the tracks – maybe not so much in the style of music, but in the heart behind it.
