The World Needs a Savior
Category: Faithblogs
Just a quick one today. I was watching Superman Returns the other night and there’s a wonderful scene where Superman takes Louis Lane for a fly and whilst floating high above Metropolis City they have a heart to heart…
Lois Lane: The world doesn’t need a savior, and neither do I.
Superman: Listen. What do you hear?
Lois Lane: Nothing.
Superman: I hear everything. You wrote that the world doesn’t need a savior, but I hear them crying for one everyday.
Many people say they don’t need a savior… that is, until they need saving. When everything is going well and people are sitting on top of the world there’s little need for anyone and anything, or so they think. But when the nasty stuff hits the fan, then where do they go… who can they call upon?
I have always loved the Superman story. In many ways I see him, as do many, as a metaphor for Jesus – Both were sent by their fathers to save mankind, “Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you… my only son.” Jor-El, Superman’s father.
Also, their enemies will stop at nothing to destroy them and stop their work. They both stand for truth and justice. And they both know that, although they are different, they are never really alone, “You will travel far, my little Kal-El, but we will never leave you… You will make my strength your own. You will see my life through your eyes, as your life will be seen through mine. The son becomes the father. And the father, the son.” Jor-El to his son Kal-El.
As I said above people say they don’t need a savior, until they need saving. Just remember that the next time you feel like you are drowning or you’re having the life sucked out of you, Jesus is waiting… and he’s listening… He hears everything. You might say that the world doesn’t need a savior, but he hears people crying out for one everyday.
