Trust
Category: Faithblogs
The Bible tells us over and over that we can trust God. In the Psalms, for instance, the Psalmist declares over and over, “I will trust in you.” To trust in God. Surely this is the essence of faith.
Many times I have spoken to people about trusting God for the things they need like health, finances, answers to prayer, healing, and so on. And many times I have been asked the question in return, “How do I trust him?”
Well, firstly we have to understand that we have a Father in Heaven. Jesus in the Lord’s prayer called him Daddy or Papa. Our relationship with our Daddy is supposed to be as close as a child to their earthly Father, if not more so, and is to be a relationship based on trust, not fear, not condemnation, but trust. We are to trust our Daddy for all of our needs.
“Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
Luke 11:11-13 (NASB)
If we go to the Psalms we can find some examples of how we are to trust our Daddy in Heaven. Psalm 20:7 tells us, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” Be honest, have you ever put your trust in material things? Have you ever looked at your bank balance or the things around you and thought, I have need of nothing. And have you ever put your trust in a house or car or business thinking it will make your life better? And while it’s true that money and homes and holidays can make life more pleasant the Psalmist reveals to us that instead of putting our trust in the things of this world, things like money, cars, and houses, we should be trust in God.
You see, the things of this world are going to pass away, they will all rust and break, and we can’t take any of our stuff with us when we pass on into eternity.
In Psalm 44:5-7 we read, “Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.” The Psalmist knew that putting his trust in an army or their weapons was fruitless at best. Yes, they may win 9 out of 10 battles because of their talent in warfare or because they have the best weapons, but what of that 10th battle? Strings on bows will eventually snap, swords will become dull, and armor is only as good as the next best weapon. The Psalmist knew that any and all real victories come from God alone – “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. ” Psalm 28:7
When was that last time you had a good nights sleep, free from fear and worry. I remember speaking to an ex-gangsta who told me that in the day he was the king of the streets, but at night, as he lay in his bed, he would have so many doubts and fears and wars of conscience. He told me he had everything a person could ever want – cars, women, money, respect, and son on – but he could never find true peace. Psalm 32:10 tells us, “Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him.”
Trusting the Lord for all that we need, for our strength, for victory against all that would come against us (fears, doubts, worries, enemies, etc.), and ultimately for peace. To some it may seem like a cop out, to trust in God. Some see God or belief in God as a crutch for the weak. I say AMEN to this! You see, without God we are weak, only he can make us strong. Without God we are nothing, but Jesus Christ has made our worth known. I can now stand because I am leaning upon Christ. I know without him I would fall to the ground, but with him I am standing tall!
Take some time to read through the book of Psalms and see how many ways the writers of these beautiful words trust in God. I touched on three, but there are many more. For now I’ll leave you with the words to the beautiful “trust” hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”
What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.
