A couple of weeks ago I was sitting with some family members and they were talking about the beautiful places they had visited. They spoke about them with great zeal as they recounted the beauty they no only saw but experienced – golden sandy beaches in exotic locations offering the best in food and entertainment.
I must admit I would like to visit some beautiful places. With that said I would find it very difficult to part with the kind of cash required for a trip to one of these places. Not just because I’m “thrifty” (some would call it cheap) but because I don’t know if I could justify the expense, especially when one considers that in many of these “beautiful” places there are people living in terrible poverty not too far away.
This got me to thinking, why do we spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to go to nice places and do nice things? To make memories? Okay I’ll give you that one. But I think one of the main reasons that we treat ourselves to nice vacations and do our best in life to have nice things is because there’s inbuilt into all of us the desire for something better.
Do you ever wonder why people spend their whole lives working to get more or why people buy what they often cannot afford? Why? Because in some small way I believe we are all looking for Heaven.
Let’s face it if the Bible is to be believed then Heaven is a place of great beauty, riches, and abundance in every way – a place free from fear, greed, pain, disease, and death. But all of this means nothing when one considers that Heaven is the dwelling place of God Almighty. And yet he chooses to share his perfect and beautiful home with us (Rev. 21).
I met someone on Saturday who told me that it’s the journey that counts and not the destination. I believe it’s both – this life is to be lived to the max and the destination is Heaven itself. We cannot, we dare not forsake one in favor of the other.
