It Is Begun

begunmainYesterday I took a shovel and plunged it into the dirt… in other words I broke ground on my first book. It was an exciting yet overwhelming moment and all kinds of stuff went through my mind – Where will I start? Will it ever get published? Will it be any good? Will it sell even if it does get published or will it end up in a dump bin in a dollar store along with all the other brilliant books that made it that far? You know how it goes?!?

Beginning something new is hard and I should know I started more things than I can count or finished. But it’s even harder when you don’t know where it is going to lead. I’m not talking about the book, I have been playing this book around in my head for the last couple of years. What I’m talking about is where this writing thing will take me – in a couple of years will I still be a struggling writer or will I be a published bestselling author with another one on the way? Who knows…

And maybe it’s better that way. Let’s face it if you knew where you would be in five years would you really like to know? Would you like to know who’s still around and who’s gone on to meet their maker? Would you like to know if that idea ever gets off the ground? Would you want to know if you ever amount to anything? Thinking about this further maybe for some people this would be good. What if Adolph Hitler had seen who he became… then again if he had seen his fate maybe he would have avoided it and won the WW2!

We are on a journey and if the past six years have taught me anything it is this… to expect the unexpected, to cherish each and every day, scratch that, each and every moment, and to rely on God’s guiding and provision.

So as I begin the process of writing my first book I take comfort in knowing I don’t do this alone and that whatever happens it will be within God’s plan, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
