Burning Bibles

Category: Stuff

I wish the following video was a joke, but it’s not. Let me know what you’re thinking after watching this…

CANTON, N.C. (October 13, 2009)—The Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C. will celebrate Halloween by burning Bibles that aren’t the King James Version, as well as music and books and anything else Pastor Marc Grizzard says is a satanic influence.

Among the authors whose books Grizzard plans to burn are well known ministers Rick Warren and Billy Graham because he says they have occasionally used Bibles other than the King James Version, which is the sole biblical source he considers infallible.

According to the church’s Web site, members will also burn “Satan’s music such as country, rap, rock, pop, heavy metal, western, soft and easy, southern gospel, contemporary Christian, jazz, soul (and) oldies.

“We will also be burning Satan’s popular books written by heretics like Billy Graham, Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, John McArthur, James Dobson, Charles Swindoll, John Piper, Chuck Colson, Tony Evans, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swagart, Mark Driskol, Franklin Graham, Bill Bright, Tim Lahaye, Paula White, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn, Joyce Myers, Brian McLaren, Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa, The Pope, Rob Bell, Erwin McManus, Donald Miller, Shane Claiborne, Brennan Manning (and) William Young.

During the book burning, according to the Web site, barbecued chicken fried chicken and “all the sides” will be served. “I’d like the chicken with a side of heathen please!” :?

  1. Just a thought, but what happens when they discover that one of their own has sinned? Burn them? 8O Scary Poppins if you ask me!
    Chris

  2. I want to burn his overalls.

  3. Seriously…. God forgive them and us!!!!!!!!!!

What will happen when they actually find out that the King James Version in its original writing was manipulated by the King’s writers to include scripture that supported the Church state!!!!!!!!

WHY do these people get air time and all the good people of faith who are serving their God and their communities get no publicity!

Would someone please take a pill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Ruth… I agree  I bet the guy woke up one day and said “Ah know, I thunk ah’ll be a preecher.” OK, I being facetious, but I think that this kind of fundamentalism usually comes through lack of education, bigotry, and a lot of sheer ignorance. I bet he’s never asked himself if he could actually be wrong ‘coz he’s too busy reading his latest shipment from FundyMental Publishing. Hot diggedy dang, burning Bibles… that’s right up there with the Nazi’s! God forgive them for they really don;t know what they are doing!

  5. Trevor, they get air time because they’re nuts, pure and simple, and people love the fruit and nut cakes… Jerry Springer made a nice career out of exploiting this bent in us. There is no English, French, Spanish, Korean, German, or any other modern language Bible that is 100% accurate to the original text because translation is not truly perfect science as some words and meanings get lost in translation, not to mention the contextual stuff. To cap it all off, even when we go to the original texts (Hebrew and Greek) we still all too often stand divided as to meaning and relevance because of our own presuppositions that are informed by religious, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, et al.

  6. Even though the King James Version is the original version that Jesus taught from, I don’t think that we are bound to it. :P

Seriously, this is a shame. This is why we are mocked in the world. I don’t think we are called to burn books. It brings a negative shadow to God’s work. I don’t think I have ever heard a concrete reason as to why people adhere to a KJV only mentality. Honestly, if we wanted the pure Word, then we would go back to the Greek/Hebrew texts and teach strictly from those.

  7. I totally agree Robert. And as to where this KJV only mentality come from? I have an idea and it’s not from God. Maybe we have proof that the devil will even use the Bible in his lies…

  8. Wow. This is intense. It makes me sad that people see this and then label all of Christianity like this. Christian, I agree with you… I think we do have proof that satan twists Scripture and people just run with it.
    Amazing.

  9. Hey Carrie, Thanks for your comment. It is a shame that people label all Christians the same. What they fail to realize is that there are fundamental and liberal groups in all spheres of life, not just Christianity. The thing is with Christian’s like this we really don’t need satan anymore… a sad day indeed.
