Christmas Flicks

Category: Stuff

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without good food, family, friends, games, presents, and of course, Christmas movies (oh, and let’s not leave out Jesus… ). Personally at Christmas time I like to spend time with my family playing games such as Monopoly, Settlers of Catan, and 2’s (a great card game), eating way more than I should, relaxing, and watching movies. Last week I had a couple of requests through my Twitter account asking if I could recommend some Christmas movies for the coming holidays, which I am only too happy to do.

So here goes (all great for families):
Silent Night - Linda Hamilton in a Christmas movie set in WW2 Germany.
The Muppets Christmas Carol - Always a hit with my family. We’ve watched this every year for the past 15 years.
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas - I’m one of the few, it seems, that prefers the Jim Carrey version to the cartoon. But whichever version you watch the message is just as powerful.

The Nativity – A modern retelling of the journey that Mary and Joseph took to get to Bethlehem, where the Savior of the world was born.
The Christmas Shoes and The Christmas Blessing – Two weepies guaranteed to get the old tear ducts leaking. Very good movies that are far better than most of the Christmas TV movies shown each year.
Fred Claus - I didn’t expect to like this movie, but it was funny and poignant.
The Wool Cap - A great movie about forgiveness at this special time of year. Not recommended for younger children.
The Man Who Saved Christmas – Jason Alexander (George from Seinfeld) stars in this heartwarming tale of making a stand for what’s good and right.
A Christmas Carol - Although I like the versions of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol starring Alistair Sims and Albert Finney I love the version starring Star Trek’s Patrick Stewart. Atmospheric, spooky, and not played for laughs.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – Chevy Chase in one of his best movies – a classic and an American national treasure!
and of course, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey in the best Christmas movie ever, It’s a Wonderful Life.

I’ve heard that the following movies are also good, but I haven’t seen them yet… Noelle, Joyeux Noel, and The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey.

  1. Every year the family and I watch “A Christmas Story”, a must. It reminds me of growing up in Indiana (where it was filmed). I like the Hallmark Christmas Carol version with Kelsey Grammer. It’s serious and fun at the same time. “Christmas Vacation” is a staple. As well as “Jingle All the Way”, “Elf” & “Christmas with the Kranks”. The first “Home Alone” and maybe the second. There is also the cartoon classics, such as Rudolph, Frosty, etc. It has started to become too much to watch. But it is all fun!

  2. Good choices. Not a movie but a goodie… the Mr Bean Christmas special… always a hoot.

  3. Oh, and A Charlie Brown Christmas… always a good one!
