Mary Did You Know?
Category: Faithblogs
One of my favorite modern Christmas songs is Mary Did You Know? I love this song and it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Think about it, there was Mary laying in a dirty stable having given birth to her firstborn. She was tired from the travel to Bethlehem and having endured labor. Yet as she laid there holding her baby close to her chest she probably smiled and, looking into her sons eyes, began to wonder.
She perhaps wondered what He would grow to look like, what He would be like, how He would lead the people, what He would teach, and ultimately how he would set His people free. Mary held in her arms the Messiah, the promised chosen One, and as she gazed upon this little helpless child she must have wondered why he came as a baby and not a conquering warrior upon the horses of Heaven.
Have you ever had the privilege of holding a new born baby. Anyone who has will know that when you look down at that baby you are filled with both awe and hope for the child. You can’t help but instantly fall in love with that baby and wonder what hopes, joys, and dreams will unfold in their life. And believers, when holding a new born baby, will say a little prayer that the child will know and love God, will walk in His ways, and live life to the full.
Maybe the reason why so many people love Christmas is because it’s about a child. But Christmas is not just about any child, Christmas is about a child of promise, a child of hope, a child of reason and meaning and joy and ultimately love. A child that grew into a man who taught and showed us the truth, pointed to our Father in Heaven, and loved us soooooooooo much that He literally laid down His life for us.
This Christmas amidst all the hubbub, parties, rushing around, parties, tooing-and-froing, parties, church functions, parties, family gatherings, parties, presents, parties, making merry, and parties, it would be good for us to slow down and think about a baby, a baby that ended up changing the world. And the beautiful thing is, Mary lived to see everything.
Mary Did You Know? I think she did!
