The Overly Violent Book of Eli?

Category: Stuff

There are a lot of movies coming out this year that I am really looking forward to watching. Perhaps the one that I am looking forward to the most, thus far, is the Denzel Washington vehicle The Book of Eli, which hits theaters this Friday (15th Jan. 2010).

The Book of Eli is a post apocalyptic movie in which Denzel Washington plays a traveler on a mission to protect a book… the last known Holy Bible. Now before you go and buy tickets for the whole family be warned: there is a lot of violence in this movie. However, for discerning viewers the movie is looking like it might just be the surprise movie of the year.

I am hoping that the movie is respectful of God’s Word, not just using it for the sake of a story. The violence in the movie is already making some people question the movie’s integrity, while other naysayers are pointing the finger and saying that the movie displays a typical violent bent in religious folk, hence all the “Christian” violence throughout history.

As for me, I’m holding out judgment until I have at least watched The Book of Eli and I have to say that at this point I am hoping that it is going to be a surprise spiritual gem in the same vein as I Am Legend and Signs.

I will review this movie as soon as I have seen it… so watch this space!

  1. I wondered what this movie is about. Maybe it will be a take on the song “One Tin Soldier”. Have you seen the previews for the horrific looking “Legion”? I hate when movies use the Word as inspiration, but then malign it. It’s amazing how smart us humans are in the movies. Able to even outsmart God and thwart his plans. Ugh!

  2. Yeah Legion looks like a load. I wrote a little piece on it and the state of the movie scene a couple of months back… to read click here. However, I am looking forward to Denzel kick some butt whilst protecting the last Bible. BTW: Denzel is himself a Christian (the son of a preacher and member of his home church for over 25 years) and is one of the most influential Christians in Hollywood. Let’s pray that if nothing else he is able to touch lives in the freak show that is Hollywood for Christ!
